History

In 1980 a group of professional physicians working in Rajshahi city noted that from the population of patients coming to Rajshahi city for treatment a very sizable number is being diagnosed as having advanced cancer. Rajshahi has meager facilities for cancer treatment; mostly because cancer treatment takes a long time and a lot of money. Overloaded Government hospitals cannot afford a long term treatment nor do our patients can afford a long term stay away from home. Hence a majority of such patients are obliged to go back to their home and family without treatment and counting their painful days in a pitiable condition till the final call. Worst part of the deal is that it happens every day in front of the bewildered family members who have no idea what to do.
This drew attention of a group of social workers. They decided to rent a house for accommodation and palliative treatment to those cancer patients coming from surrounding areas. They named that house as “Cancer Shelter”.
This service was continued from 1982 to 2000. By that time the committee people came to realize that cancer shelter was not adequate enough to serve the purpose. What is really needed is a full – fledged cancer hospital from where:
  1. Proper medical treatment can be given to the patients,
  2. Qualified Consultation service can be given in the hospital,
  3. Diagnostic facilities should be there to detect early cancer,
  4. Start treatment in an early stage of the disease, and
  5. Motivational work can be done for the common people so that they can know the facts about the disease. The idea should be propagated through seminars and symposia that cancer is not a dreadful disease anymore and it can be handled if they come to a doctor at an early stage of the disease.
For the above reason the committee purchased a land to build a specialized hospital for the treatment of Cancer patients.
